Raft is a survival game that turns the genre on its head by taking you off of solid ground and planting you on uncertain waters instead. You're trapped on a raft in the middle of a seemingly endless ocean, and you'll need to manage both your thirst and hunger. But those acts of meager survival grow - along with the size and capabilities of your raft - as you continue through the game.

Fortunately, the ocean is filled with all sorts of debris that you can use to expand your seacraft. With a simple fishing mechanism, you can hoist materials from the waters and then incorporate them into your ever-developing ship. The demands of hunger and thirst are relatively slight, resulting in a game that's ultimately about building fantastic creations than it is about simply scraping by. As you develop your ship, you can even build nets that will automatically trawl the ocean for you.

It's a gameplay loop that appears relatively primitive at first but opens up smartly over the course of the game. Raft has a surprising amount of lore and a refreshingly deep story to go along with the experience - and the developers have done a smart job slowly unfurling it. As your raft becomes more sophisticated, you'll find new islands and underwater environments to explore. And as is becoming increasingly common in builder games, multiplayer is included so you can share your unique raft with all of your friends. They can even double down on the work and help you complete raft renovations in a fraction of the time.
